Why is coaching important for managers?

Question:

Why is everyone getting managers to do coaching and leadership training? Surely we are promoted because we can do the job? And do they really want us to make changes or just use different words? I am so fed up of the constant additional requests placed on me as a manager.

My Answer

Managers are people, people need support and have limited personal and professional awareness.

Managers are no different, however if a manager is supported in developing and expanding their personal and professional awareness then they have the capacity to support their teams and the larger organisation in developing beyond the current potential limit.

Usually, managers are promoted because they were good at doing the job they are now being asked to motivate and guide others doing.

Some organisations want real cultural change and others know they need a change but are unsure in what way and let’s be honest training is often used as a plaster for a deeper issue in the organisational culture not because they mean it to be but because it isn’t always clear what is really needed and training is a technical solution to a lot of challenges.

So yes if this is the case, the organisation is trying but might not really know what is needed. So it might feel like demand and request after request, but if they are giving you training, it’s important to remember they are trying. If they are giving you nothing, then I would suggest that worse.

WHAT YOU CAN DO ….

  • Utilise EVERy support available to you, to help you be your best from the organisation and in your own time.
  • Feedback your frustrations to someone that can hear them, people and culture teams are usually good fits or your manager. Sometimes the right people aren’t hearing the real thing.
  • Practice noticing your own reactions as yours and get curious about your own frustrations and what needs they may be pointing towards.
  • Oh yeah go to the coaching and training, we all have something to learn, no one knows it all.
