Why bother with tailored leadership development programmes?

I was asked why I focus on tailored leadership development programmes and not just the easy-to-do/buy/sell model of one size fits all.

I have stood in front of too many people who needed something from training but because of the design of the training were sitting through a ready-made model that fits like a bad pair of jeans.

My background is in coaching psychology, a responsive, leader-led process with transformational results. Why would I want to offer something “ok” rather than transformative?

It costs more to squeeze ill-fitted training onto a person’s leadership than just getting a quick measure upfront. It costs people engagement, commitment, sense of worth, and investment; it is a draining process.

And it doesn’t look right to use the wrong leadership approach for an organisation or industry. It just feels all wrong and looks all wrong when people do it.

Tailored leadership training is no more expensive than training that’s ill-fitted and doesn’t get the impact it could.

Tailored training is data-driven, matching participants’ needs to evidence-based leadership approaches.

Again, how you do one thing, you do everything. Tailoring a leadership approach is good for the organisation, good for the participants, and good for their direct reports and peers.

It is a no-brainer, get in a private consultancy/training firm with low overheads (hopefully ours) and allow them to get the weight of the data from your people in 2 simple steps, then design an informed training and leadership approach and then deliver it to your people.

Then they and you can track the results because they have set you up to succeed with creative ways to measure impact and to continue the development after their training.
